teaching Experiences
MARESA Transition Program:
I spent over 8 weeks during the fall semester, along with a practicum the previous May at the MARESA Transition Program. This is a school for students, ages 18-26, who have a disability. The Transition Program focuses on gaining life skills and getting students prepared to be members of their community. Students are given job experience, and many of them are able to get long-term paid employment. During my time there I was able to build lessons which taught students valuable life lessons. Some examples include managing money, hygiene, and communication skills. On top of providing instruction in the classroom, I was able to use community resources to help drive learning. Every week I was in the community with students, making purchases at stores, volunteering, or spending time outdoors. In this setting I was able to learn a lot about working with students with disabilities and teaching life skills. Towards the end of my student teaching I was able to step into a long term sub position at the school. This meant fully taking over my own classroom with more independence, and less immediate support. I felt that the opportunity was came at the perfect time, as I was able to truly flourish as a teacher.

I spent 8 weeks from August to October teaching English at Republic-Michigamme Schools. During my time at the school I was able to teach grades 6, 7, 9-12. Having so many grades to teach I was able to gain experience in teaching a wide variety of topics in English. From 6/7th grade reading and writing, to English 1, and British Literature, I was able to learn a lot about creating lessons for different ages, skill levels, and genres of English. Also during my time in Republic, I formed great relationships with staff and students. It was during this portion of student teaching that I saw how much my personality plays into who I am as a teacher. I see myself as a very real and grounded teacher, who also likes to laugh and have a good time. My ability to balance seriousness with fun helped me to form connections with students and build trust in the classroom. Students respected me, as I did them, which made for easy classroom management. I was able to comfortably communicate with my students and get to know them as human beings, beyond students. These are skills I carried over into my next placement, and something I plan on taking with me for the rest of my career.
