Classroom Community
The Pillars of a Classroom Community
In my classroom I aim to to build a strong and well rounded classroom community. In doing this, I focus on four main pillars of my classroom community. These pillars are Understanding, Support, Expectations, and Willingness to Learn. Each of these pillars will be embodied by the classroom as a whole. Meaning students, teachers, paraprofessionals, etc. are expected to fulfill these pillars and be an active member of our classroom community. Each pillar is taught through clear communication, rules, and by the teachers and staff leading by example. When students come to school and are a part of a classroom community that makes them feel safe and respected, they will be more willing to participate, and as a result their likelihood to grow academically will increase. School is not just a place to learn academics, it is a place students learn the skills they need to succeed. Social and emotional skills can be just as important academics, and should be supported in the classroom.
Understanding:
All people in the classroom will take the time to listen, ask questions, and reflect in order to gain a better understanding of topics, events, and each other.
support:
All people in the classroom will be there for one another. We will answer questions, listen to one another, and be there to lend a helping hand. No one is alone on our classroom.
Expectations:
All people in the classroom will know what is expected of them. They will do what is expected of them, and communicate if they need help in these tasks. We will all work together to hold ourselves and our peers accountable.
Willingness to learn:
All people in the classroom will be open to learning new information and trying new things. We will consider other perspectives and will not judge. Everyone is a student in the classroom, and we understand that learning can take time.
